PPF the best protection for your car !

PPF in Ireland – Long-Term Paint Protection for Your Car

If you want your car to look as close to new as possible for many years, understanding PPF is essential.

Paint Protection Film (PPF) is currently the most advanced solution available for protecting automotive paintwork from real-world damage. In Irish driving conditions – loose road debris, motorway traffic, wet climate and constant exposure to contaminants – paint damage happens faster than most owners expect.

This guide explains:

  • What PPF is and how thick it is
  • The difference between PPF and ceramic coating
  • Why PPF makes sense in Ireland
  • What options are available
  • How installation works
  • How to maintain a vehicle with PPF
  • How pricing and quotations are calculated

What Is Paint Protection Film (PPF)?

Paint Protection Film is a transparent polyurethane film applied to painted surfaces to create a physical protective barrier.

Modern high-quality PPF has a total thickness of approximately 180–200 microns.

For comparison, the clear coat layer on most modern vehicles is often around 40–60 microns thick. This means PPF adds a significantly thicker sacrificial layer on top of the paint.

A properly installed PPF system:

  • Absorbs impact from stone chips
  • Reduces the risk of parking scratches
  • Protects against minor abrasions
  • Preserves original paintwork

At OCD Detailing, we use ADBL Protect PPF, a high-quality film featuring:

  • Self-healing top layer
  • Hydrophobic properties
  • Excellent optical clarity
  • 10-year manufacturer warranty (against yellowing, discoloration and delamination)

The warranty does not cover:

  • Mechanical damage
  • Damage caused by aggressive chemicals
  • Panels that have been previously repainted

PPF vs Ceramic Coating – What’s the Difference?

Many people researching PPF in Ireland also consider ceramic coatings. While both offer protection, they serve different purposes.

Ceramic Coating:

  • Enhances gloss
  • Adds hydrophobic properties
  • Protects against UV and chemicals
  • Makes cleaning easier

However, ceramic coating does not protect against stone chips.

PPF:

  • Creates a thick physical barrier
  • Absorbs impact from road debris
  • Protects against stone chips
  • Self-heals light wash marring
  • Offers hydrophobic characteristics

For many vehicle owners, the ideal solution is:

Full Front PPF combined with ceramic coating on the remaining panels.

This approach protects the most vulnerable areas while maintaining cost efficiency.

Why PPF Makes Sense in Ireland

Installing PPF in Ireland is particularly beneficial due to local driving conditions:

  • Loose gravel on rural roads
  • Motorway debris from heavy vehicles
  • Constant moisture and rain
  • Long-distance commuting

Stone chips on front bumpers and bonnets are extremely common within the first year of ownership.

If your goal is to maintain your car in excellent condition for many years, protecting the front impact zones early is critical.

PPF helps preserve:

  • Paint integrity
  • Visual appearance
  • Long-term resale value

PPF Installation Options

We offer professional PPF installation in Ireland in several configurations:

Full Front PPF

Includes:

  • Front bumper
  • Bonnet
  • Front wings
  • Mirrors
  • Headlights

This is the most popular and practical option.

Full Body PPF

Complete coverage of all painted panels.

Recommended for:

  • New vehicles
  • Long-term ownership
  • Drivers who want maximum protection

Interior Gloss Protection

We also protect high-gloss interior trims such as:

  • Piano black panels
  • Centre console surfaces

These surfaces scratch extremely easily in daily use.

How the Installation Process Works

Professional PPF installation is a technical process requiring precision.

  1. Full inspection of paintwork
  2. Complete decontamination
  3. Machine polishing if necessary
  4. Precision film installation

We operate our own plotter and use advanced software, allowing us to:

  • Cut our own patterns
  • Modify templates for better fit
  • Wrap as many edges as physically possible

Installation is performed without removing any body panels .

Due to the design of certain panels — for example, door edges adjacent to the front wings, or bumper areas where they meet neighbouring panels — it is physically not possible to fully wrap the film around those edges without disassembling parts of the vehicle.

As our installation process does not involve removing panels, the PPF finishes at the panel edge in these specific areas rather than being fully wrapped behind it.

We do not remove body parts for the purpose of installation.

In normal viewing conditions this is minimally visible, but under close inspection it can be detected by someone specifically looking for it.

Our priority is maximum coverage while maintaining installation safety and structural integrity.

Post Instalation Inspecion

3–6 weeks after installation, the vehicle returns for inspection.

During this visit:

  • The car is carefully washed
  • Film edges are checked
  • Installation stability is verified

After inspection, we issue service warranty documentation.

This follow-up procedure is standard practice .

Is Paint Correction Necessary Before PPF Installation?

This is a common question when considering PPF in Ireland, especially for vehicles that are not brand new.

For older vehicles, we perform machine polishing to:

  • Remove deeper scratches
  • Eliminate oxidation
  • Properly prepare the paint surface before film installation

However, a full multi-stage correction aimed at completely removing swirl marks is not required prior to PPF installation.

In our professional opinion, performing a full cosmetic correction solely to eliminate light swirl marks before installing PPF is often unnecessary and simply increases the cost of the service.

High-quality Paint Protection Film has optical properties that visually mask and completely hide light swirl marks once installed. The film adhesive activates during installation and levels minor surface imperfections beneath it.

It is also important to understand what happens long term.

If, years later, the PPF is removed:

  • Adhesive residue will remain on the paint — just like with vinyl wrapping
  • Adhesive removal is rarely completely non-invasive
  • In most cases, some level of paint correction is required after glue residue removal

Because of this, investing in a full cosmetic correction before installing PPF does not always make practical sense. Even if the paint is made perfect beforehand, it is very difficult to guarantee it will remain in flawless condition after future film removal.

For that reason, we focus on:

  • Removing deeper defects
  • Ensuring the paint is stable and properly prepared
  • Creating the best possible foundation for long-term protection

However, full paint correction can absolutely be performed upon request at extra charge for clients who specifically want maximum cosmetic refinement before installation.

Our role is to advise honestly and tailor the process to your expectations and long-term plans for the vehicle.

How Pricing Is Calculated

To provide an accurate quotation, we require:

  • Make
  • Model
  • Year of manufacture
  • Photos of the front, sides and rear

send to hello@ocddetailing.ie

Pricing depends on several factors:

  • Complexity of panel design
  • Scope of coverage (full front vs full body)
  • Total amount of material required for the installation

Different vehicles require significantly different amounts of film. The surface area and design complexity directly affect material consumption and installation time.

Accurate details allow us to provide an accurate quote.

How to Maintain a Car with PPF

PPF is highly durable but not indestructible.

Self-healing properties:

  • Repair light surface swirls caused by safe washing
  • Activate with heat (sunlight or warm water)
  • Are limited to minor surface marks

Proper maintenance is essential:

  • Use safe wash methods
  • Avoid aggressive chemicals
  • Maintain regular cleaning schedule

Hydrophobic properties typically remain strong for 2–3 years. After that, you can:

  • Apply a ceramic coating over the film
  • Use SiO2 quick detailers (such as ADBL Ceramic QD) periodically

Correct care ensures long-lasting appearance and performance.

When PPF Is Not Recommended

We do not install PPF on:

  • Vehicles with existing stone chips
  • Poor-condition paintwork
  • Damaged or unstable repaint work (without prior assessment)

PPF does not hide damage. It preserves good paint — it does not repair bad paint.

For best results, installation should be performed on:

  • New vehicles
  • Or paintwork in excellent condition

Is PPF Worth It?

If your goal is to keep your car in near-perfect condition for many years, professional PPF in Ireland is one of the most effective solutions available.

It protects against real-world damage that ceramic coating alone cannot prevent.

PPF does not make your vehicle indestructible.
But it dramatically reduces the everyday damage that affects long-term appearance.
